Preparedness!!
This is why preparedness is so important. If you have a second floor, and particularly if you sleep there, you need to have a way to get out in case of fire that does not involve a jump and a free fall. A fire excape ladder costs less than $40, much less than it will cost to fix whatever she has broken. And then there is the unnecessary pain!
It seems all they managed to throw out was a comforter. With no fire ladder, it is probably too much to hope that somewhere on their property they have a cache with keys, cash, and a flash drive with scans of their vital documents. Doesn’t look like there was a bug-out-bag, either. Notes
